European Commission proposes significant revisions to the European Works Council Directive
20 March 2024The European Commission has published a draft directive that would significantly amend the 2009 European Works Council Directive. If enacted, these reforms would have profound implications for all businesses with a European Works Council. However, enactment of the draft directive in its current form remains far from certain with the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers expected to adopt conflicting positions, and European Parliamentary elections being due in a matter of months.

Sponsor Management System outage immediately ahead of work route salary rises
20 March 2024The Home Office is switching off the Sponsor Management System (SMS) from 19:00 on 2 April 2024 until 9:00 on 4 April 2024. This brings forward the deadline for sponsors to issue Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) before salary threshold rises take effect for work routes from 4 April 2024.

Pension auto-enrolment

19 March 2024All employers are required to automatically enrol eligible jobholders into a suitable pension scheme and fund a minimum level of pension savings (without reducing pay or benefits elsewhere). At least 8% of qualifying earnings must be paid into the pension scheme, with a minimum employer contribution of 3%.

EPO fee increases
15 March 2024The European Patent Office (EPO) is introducing a new schedule of official fees, which will apply to payments made from Monday 1 April 2024. The new fees represent an increase of, on average, 4%. There are, however, some notable exceptions, with the third, fourth and fifth year renewal fees increasing by 30%, 28% and 8% respectively. Subsequent renewals have not changed significantly. As such, the EPO appears to be targeting recovery of renewal fee income that has reduced in recent years, due to a reduction of the average time to reach grant.
