EPO issues electronic grant certificates

From 1 April 2022, the EPO started issuing electronic grant certificates to representatives who have an activated electronic mailbox. (Representatives without an electronic mailbox will continue to receive paper certificates.)

The electronically issued certificate is a digital colour document, which we can retrieve and forward to patent proprietors. The new system means our clients will receive their grant certificates more quickly and securely and will improve sustainability.

The EPO has refreshed the layout and content of the certificate. Additional information about the patent will appear on the certificate, namely:

• the title of the invention, and
• the date of publication of the mention of the grant in the European Patent Bulletin.

The EPO will continue to issue certified copies of certificates on paper, with the specification annexed, upon request and payment of an administrative fee.
